Build QR-code scavenger hunts in minutes

QR Trail is a browser-based tool for building QR-code scavenger hunts. Teachers write a series of clues, each paired with a question. QR Trail generates a printable PDF — one QR code per clue. Place the printed codes around a classroom or outdoor site, and students scan each one on any smartphone to advance to the next location. A live dashboard shows who is progressing, their current position, and their score in real time. No app required. No passwords for students. Ready to run in under ten minutes.

Common questions

How does QR Trail work?

Teachers create a trail by writing a series of clues, each paired with a multiple-choice question. QR Trail generates a printable PDF with one QR code per clue. Teachers place the printed codes around a classroom, school grounds, or outdoor site. Students scan each code on any smartphone, answer the question, and are directed to the next location. A live dashboard shows progress in real time.

Do students need to download an app?

No app is required. QR Trail runs entirely in the browser. Students scan a QR code with any smartphone camera and the clue opens directly as a webpage. There is nothing to install or create an account for. The student experience works on iOS, Android, and any device with a camera and a web browser. No student data is stored unless named mode is enabled by the teacher.

Do students need to create an account or use a password?

Students do not need accounts or passwords to join a trail. They scan the first QR code and either enter their name or are assigned an anonymous identifier — that's all. Teachers sign in with a magic link sent to their email address. There are no passwords anywhere in the system, for teachers or students.

What is anonymous mode in QR Trail?

Anonymous mode assigns each participant a randomly generated identifier — such as a colour and animal combination — instead of asking them to enter their name. Teachers can see all participants on the live dashboard without collecting any personal information. This is useful for quick classroom activities where data minimisation and student privacy are a priority.

How do I print QR codes for my trail?

Once you have built a trail and added all your clues, QR Trail generates a print-ready PDF at the click of a button. The PDF contains one page per clue, each with the QR code, the clue text, and a unique identifier. You can print on standard A4 paper and place the sheets around your venue before participants arrive.
